Sharon Stone never fails to grab a headline when she wants to. In the latest attempt to get her name in the news to promote her upcoming film, Basic Instinct 2, the actress proclaims that teenagers should practice more oral sex.

A report from the United Kingdom says that the 48-year old actress believes that teenagers should be prepared to engage in oral sex, if it saves from them the dangers of an overly aggressive individual that is pushing them to engage in intercourse.

She explains, "I was in the store the other day and I watched a young girl trying on clothes, showing her abdomen." Her mother was trying to talk to her about not being inappropriately alluring.

I said, 'Gee that would look much nicer with a camisole under.' "Her mother walked away, and I said to the girl, 'I'd like to give you a two-minute conversation about sex.'

"Young people talk to me about what to do if they're being pressed for sex. I tell them (what I believe): oral sex is a hundred times safer than vaginal or anal sex. "If you're in a situation where you cannot get out of sex, offer a blow job. I'm not embarrassed to tell them.".

Teens Are Out Of Control!

Reading the above story really got me thinking today. Over the last few years I have noticed the behavioral patterns of teens spiraling downward. Although I happen to agree with Ms. Stone’s comments to a certain point, the fact she has to even offer this advice is rather disturbing.

Things are starting to get out of control. A recent newspaper report told the story about a 12 year old girl who got beaten and stabbed at an after hours party. What was a girl this age doing out at such a late hour? I also recently read that a gang of teen boys severely beat up and stab another at a Shopping Mall simply because he was “Invading Their Turf”. The young lad was lucky that the knife narrowly missed his spinal cord by millimeters. One of the most disturbing things in the last few years I heard about was the “Rainbow” parties, where the color of the bracelet a teen would wear decided what sexual act he/she performed. Many School boards have banned kids from wearing gang colors, bandana’s and bracelets because of the outrageousness in kid’s behavior.

The above stories are an example of daily occurrences across the world, and not akin to one particular region. Watch any newscast or read a paper from anywhere in the world on any given day and you will see stories like this and sometimes much worse. Why are kids behaving like this then?

I attribute it to many factors. One is that kids are easily influenced particularly by Television and bad role models. Look at the junk we see on MTV with series like Jackass, Punk’d, and Bam Margera. Most of today’s Musicians and Athletes are certainly nothing to look up to – they are rewarded for their badness and kids see this and think they can pull the same stunts and have the same bad attitudes because their favorite people are successful by being this way. What message are we sending?

The second major factor in my mind is bad parenting. These days, parents are focused on their careers more than raising their children. Some are married to their jobs – putting in more hours than really necessary, forgetting they have a responsibility at home to their families. Also, they often take the easy way out by showering their kids with an abundance of unnecessary junk, like every toy imaginable, the latest video games, you get the point. Instead of spending quality time, they give them other things to pass their time. Discipline is another thing severely lacking from parents these days. I have never condoned the use of violence towards children, this includes spanking. There are much more effective ways to punish and deter kids from mis-behaving. When I was a child, I was afraid of disappointing my parents more than anything else, this is what kept me somewhat in line. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen with my own eyes lately parents succumbing to the whines, cries and protests of their children. What are we teaching them by being this way? If they scream loud enough or cry they will always get their way? Parents need to toughen up and stop babying their kids.

Lastly, I blame the kids themselves. Some of them take advantage of the love and generosity they are shown by their families, and they easily succumb to peer pressure. Kids seem to want to take the easy way out these days, are afraid of a little hard work and do not want any suffering. What they fail to realize is hard work and taking the difficult path sometimes makes you wiser and stronger. If everything is handed to you on a silver platter, you will not appreciate the true meaning and value of things. The one word you always hear on the lips of kids is RESPECT, and quite frankly they have no idea of the true meaning of the word and need to really have some of it, not just mimic and repeat what some rapper says in his interviews or songs. The “THUG LIFE” “GANGSTA” mentality is not cool at all; kids should look back at history, watch movies and the real message they will see is that nothing good ever comes from being in a gang.

The rising occurrence of sex, particularly unprotected sex amongst teens, is completely alarming. I feel they do this because of the peer pressure mostly, not necessarily because they see it on TV. Like everyone else, I was always really curious about sex and females in my youth. There were some promiscuous people in my day, but nothing like we see today. Many people my age lost their virginities at a later age than they do now, and the cases of teen pregnancy, and more importantly the spread of diseases, was much lower and tolerant those days. Today, kids are educated, warned and given tools we never had before, yet

Respect is something that is severely lacking these days both by teens and society in general. Kids need to start respecting peers, families and more importantly themselves a lot more if we are ever going to buck these disturbing trends. If I were a parent today, I would fear for the safety of my children. If things don’t change soon, who knows what horrendous stories we will be reading tomorrow, and maybe even living through ourselves? I really do not have an answer to the problem, but would love to hear what you have to say.
